The town of Smyrna is located in Rutherford County, Tennessee (fifth-largest county in Middle-Tennessee by population) and located approximately 25 miles from Nashville. Rutherford County is included in the Nashville-Davidson–Murfreesboro–Franklin Metropolitan Statistical Area.
Smyrna started out as a farming community in the early 19th Century. One of the major events of the American Civil war for the town involved the Confederate States hero Sam Davis who was charged with spying and gave up his life rather than give any information to the Union Army. The Sam Davis Plantation continues to be a prominent historical site in Smyrna.
Stewart Air Force Base was established in 1941 and served as a B-24 advanced training facility. The base was closed in 1971 and much of the additional land was turned into the Smyrna/Rutherford County Airport Authority in 1990.

During the 1970s Smyrna had a period of growth when several new companies such as Nissan Motors, Better Built Aluminum, Cumberland Swan and Square D built plants in the town.
Nissan was the first Japanese automobile manufacturer to build a plant in the United States and make its home in Smyrna. Nissan is the largest automobile manufacturing plant under one roof and has provided steady employment to approximately 6,000 workers.
