Middle Tennessee is a portion of the state comprised of 41 counties, located east of the Tennessee River. The area is characterized by majestic rolling hills, fertile valleys, abundant streams, rich farmlands and picturesque horse farms.
Middle Tennessee, West Tennessee, and East Tennessee make up what is known as the state’s three grand divisions, Middle Tennessee being the largest in area and least densely populated of the three divisions. Each division is a legally recognized entity and represented by the three stars on the Tennessee state flag.
Middle Tennessee is noted for having an abundance of institutions of higher learning including: Vanderbilt, Belmont, Lipscomb and Tennessee State Universities (Nashville); Austin Peay State University(Clarksville); Tennessee Tech University (Cookeville); Cumberland University(Lebanon); and Middle Tennessee State University (Murfreesboro).
