Rutherford County is a medium-sized community located in Middle Tennessee, 38 miles south of Nashville. Its count seat is Murfreesboro, the geographic center of Tennessee. Rutherford County is included in the Nashville–Davidson–Murfreesboro–Franklin Metropolitan Statistical Area.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Rutherford County has a total area of 624 square miles of which 619 square miles is land and 5 square miles is water.
The County was formed in 1803 from parts of Davidson, Williamson and Wilson counties named after Griffith Rutherford (1721–1805), a North Carolina colonial legislator and a Revolutionary War general who settled in Middle Tennessee.
Rutherford County is an outlying part of Metro Nashville. Since 1970 Rutherford County’s population has been increasing rapidly. The rate of 
growth accelerated in the 1990s and continued at a high growth rate into the first decade of the 21st century.
