Murfreesboro, TN History
The town was first named “Cannonsburgh” in honor Newton Cannon, a Tennessee politician and was renamed “Murfreesboro” for Revolutionary War hero Colonel Hardy Murfree. In 1818, Murfreesboro became the capital of Tennessee until 1826 when Nashville became the state capital.
Murfreesboro began as a an agricultural community and despite the trauma of the Civil War. By the early 1900s its growth began to gain momentum. World War II resulted in Murfreesboro beginning to move away from an agriculture-based economy, diversifying with industry, manufacturing, and education. Murfreesboro has enjoyed substantial and steady residential and commercial growth over the years.
